About the Trainer

Maureen Underwood

Maureen Underwood

Maureen Underwood, licensed clinical social worker, is nationally recognized in the field of youth suicide prevention, with a focus on schools and best-practice programs that enhance overall student outcomes. She is a co-author of Lifelines: A Suicide Prevention Program, Lifelines: Postvention and Lifelines: Intervention¿all published by Hazelden publications.

Underwood was the director of the NJ Adolescent Suicide Prevention Project for 15 years and served as the clinical director of the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, from 2006-2016 where she remains a clinical advisor. There she developed a two-hour online suicide prevention training which has been completed by over 415,000 school teachers, staff and administrators across the country. She has created numerous other trauma-informed and clinical programs for youth and published extensively on these and other related topics. Underwood currently provides consultation and training services through Underwood & Associates, LLC to the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County and holds an appointment as clinical adjunct faculty, Monmouth University School of Social Work.

*To be eligible for the 18 clock hours, participants must be present throughout the entirety of the training.


*CEs available for counselors (LPC, LCPC) and social workers (MSW, LMSW). CEs not offered to psychologists, but school counselors with the previous credentials will qualify. Please check with your board to confirm credits. A CE certificate is emailed upon completion of post-course evaluations. Please check with your accrediting body or state for information on your CE requirements.

  • Participants completing entire program based upon attendance reports will receive post-test and evaluation emails after 2-3 business days. Credit certificates are issued automatically via email upon successful completion of post-test and evaluation.
  • The Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School, provider #1487, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period:11/22/23-11/22/26. Social workers completing this course receive 11 continuing education credits.
  • Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0529.
  • The Graduate School is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Graduate School maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.
  • The Graduate School is an NBCC approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP # 6547, and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • The Graduate School is approved to provide continuing education by CAADE Provider # CP20 975 C 0325, CCAPP Provider Number 1N-88-160-1125, CADTP provider # 125, and CA BRN CEP 16722.
