The goal of the Peer Leadership Program is to positively influence the school and larger community through healthy norms. The peer leadership program works on two levels; first, providing social development and support for young people within the groups who choose not to use substances and secondly, to provide positive messaging to those outside the group that reinforces the reality that many young people are making healthy choices around substances. Peer Leaders not only support one another and impact the greater community but also develop leadership and communication skills that strengthen self-confidence.
Peer Leadership utilizes:
- Social Norms: The social norms approach is an evidence-based strategy for substance misuse prevention.
- Small Group Influence: Small group influence is the power of small group interaction to reinforce either healthy or unhealthy adolescent behavior.
The goals of Peer Leadership:
- Model a realistic, healthy positive norm which greatly strengthens the studentsÂ’ resolve to emulate these healthy behaviors.
- Reinforce non-using students in their substance-free behavior.
- Encourage student leadership skills that strengthen self-confidence, increase individual competencies, develop character and prevent substance misuse.
- Make non-use a more visible and viable option for students in schools and communities.
- Promote a culture of non-use that strengthens the overall health of the school climate.
The SALSA training is designed for middle and/or high school students and their adult advisors. SALSA is a peer-powered support and advocacy group of and for students who choose not to use alcohol and other drugs.
